Hillsborough County is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28, to present the preliminary floodplains within the Alafia River Watershed to the public. The County seeks to obtain valuable feedback from local residents that can be used to refine the updated watershed model and floodplain delineations.
The preliminary Alafia River Watershed Master Plan, which covers about 260 square-miles in Hillsborough County, provides an updated floodplain delineation, level-of-service analysis for roadway flooding, and stormwater project alternative analysis identifying future projects throughout the watershed that will help to address critical level-of-service deficiencies identified.
The County will present a series of floodplain mitigation projects developed with this update of the Alafia River Master Plan designed to reduce the extent/duration of historic flooding at key sites within the watershed. These projects are conceptual in nature and will potentially be added to the County’s unfunded list for future projects.
The County’s Watershed Management Plans are required to be updated in order to make complete and reliable information available to local and regional decision-makers, and the development community. This project also will identify the 100-year floodplain across this watershed, which will eventually be submitted to FEMA to update the existing Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panels containing this watershed.
