Looking for a summer project and have a green thumb? Consider a hydroponic garden, with a jump start from the Hillsborough County Extension Service.
The Extension Service will host a workshop on do-it-yourself hydroponics at their office in Seffner. The program is geared toward both home gardeners and persons who might be interested in making some extra cash by selling fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. Instead, a nutrient-rich water solution is used to feed the plants. Though it may look high-tech, the practice has been around for centuries. Hydroponic gardens can fit in small spaces - even a corner of a patio or porch will do - and can thrive almost anywhere, use water efficiently, need no herbicides, and can be grown year-round.
The workshop will cover such topics as various hydroponic setups, growing mediums, plant nutrients, irrigation systems, and more. A Spanish-speaking instructor also will be on hand.
The registration deadline is Tuesday, June 27.
