    New Riverview Teachers Welcomed
and Teachers of the Year Honored
by Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce

The purpose of Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce’s (GRCC) annual Teaching to Excellence event is to recognize Teachers of the Year, as well as welcome all new teachers, from within our 24 Riverview schools.  This year’s event was held on Wednesday, August 8th at The Regent.  Attendees were greeted at the door by a large cheering group of Shark Cheerleaders from Riverview High School.

As teachers entered the ballroom, filled with energetic music and excitement, their first stop was the GRCC table where they received a bright red reusable tote bag with several great coupons already stuffed inside.  From this table, they moved on through the 30+ Teacher Supply Stops all sponsored and manned by GRCC members.  At these tables, they were thanked for their work in our schools and were provided dozens of school supplies, coupons and goodies.  By the time the teachers reached the end of the Supply Stops, their bags were full to the top.

Event Chair Kendra Wilson, Suncoast Credit Union, welcomed the crowd of over 300 teachers, principals, and community business leaders to the event.  She then invited Pastor Don Rhone, The Bridge of the Bay Community Church, to deliver the day’s invocation.  Riverview High School NJROTC Color Guard was on hand to present the colors and our National Anthem was performed by Kassidy Gavagan.

Michelle Mosher, Southshore Insurance Professionals, 2018 GRCC President, thanked everyone in the room for their dedication to making this community great.  She acknowledged that the teaching profession requires very admirable dedication and how thankful she is that are stepping up to the challenge.  The Chamber is honored to have these schools as members of their organization and is proud of each and every one of them.

Once again, the event was brought to life by emcee Ernest Hooper, Tampa Bay Times Columnist/Editor.  In true “Hoop” style, accompanied by the On The Move Production’s perfect music pieces, each school’s Teacher of the Year, as well as their principal, were called forth in inspiring style.  Each of these teachers was presented a plaque of appreciation and posed for a professional photograph, made by Huth and Booth Photography.

Throughout the event Jill Andrew, Superior Residences of Brandon Memory Care, called out the winning numbers for dozens and dozens and dozens of door prizes that were all donated by the incredibly generous members of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce.  The Riverview High School Cheerleaders stayed busy delivering these gift baskets to the delighted teachers all over the room.

Prior to the closure of the event, Ernest “The Hoop” Hooper was able to bring to fruition something he had been working toward for several years.  Two additional raffle numbers were drawn and the winning teachers were called to the stage.  These ladies stood nervously, representing Riverview High School and Dawson Elementary while Ernest made them choose between a small envelope and a larger packet.  In the end, each of them won a terrific prize package featuring a Starbucks gift card, a fine dining experience (Mise en Place and Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant) and concert tickets. Thanks to Raymond James Stadium, one winner will be seeing Ed Sheeran and the other winner will be seeing 21 Pilots thanks to Amalie Arena.

In her closing remarks, event Co-Chair Nikki Foster, The Mosaic Company, thanked her committee and all of the many wonderful people and businesses that made this event possible.  She also let the teachers know that they weare not quite done receiving gifts.  As they exited The Regent, they would each be given two reams of copy paper and be treated to a tasty treat from Kona Ice in the parking lot.
