2020 Annual Teaching to Excellence Event Re-Imagined
    as Adopt-A-School program
by Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce

The purpose of Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce’s (GRCC) annual Teaching to Excellence event is to warmly welcome Riverview school’s new teachers and celebrate them on a community level; and to recognize/honor each of these school’s Teacher of the Year. The Teaching to Excellence event began as a vision of the late Dr. Earl Lennard, a fundamental figure in education for Hillsborough County. Lennard was born in Riverview and dedicated his career to making a difference in schools.

This year’s re-imagined event was held virtually from August 3rd-August 21st on the Teaching to Excellence Facebook page. Each Riverview school was adopted and/or supplied by one of our community partners through our Adopt-A-School program. Sponsors had the chance to choose which school they would like to adopt and then they went out and bought supplies for the teachers of their assigned school.

Each day from August 3rd-August 21st, GRCC recognized one of our Teaching to Excellence sponsors on the Teaching to Excellence Facebook page. In each post, the selected sponsor and school were tagged as well as the specific school’s Teacher of the Year. For our Adopt-A-School sponsors, the Facebook post also included a video that highlighted the specific business, the school, and the school’s Teacher of the Year. Each highlight video posted was boosted and received at least 1,200 views from the surrounding community. GRCC worked hand in hand with Joe Zuniga of Zuniga Marketing and Ernest Hooper from the American Cancer Society to put together a 2020 Teaching to Excellence promotional video. This video received over 3,500 views through boosting and others sharing on their personal and business pages.

Due to the tremendous support of our community partners, sponsors, and donors, GRCC was able to support all 28 local Riverview schools with school supplies for this school year. Each Teacher of the Year also received a plaque from the GRCC which commended their hard work and dedication to their school and their students. GRCC was grateful to receive 26 generous sponsors plus over $1,000 in donations from the support of our membership. In addition, Your Pie Brandon donated a free pizza and combo to each Teacher of the Year and the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) donated 1 free year of admission to each new teacher. Special thanks to Nikki Foster from The Mosaic Company and Kendra Wilson from Suncoast Credit Union - Big Bend Service Center for leading this year’s committee.
