Five (5) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Riverview area high school seniors in memory of prominent local educator Dr. Earl Lennard. Dr. Lennard was a longtime educator who served as Hillsborough County's Superintendent of Schools and as its Supervisor of Elections. Earl became a teacher in Hillsborough schools in 1963, working his way up to the top post in 1996. Lennard retired from education in 2005, and from the elections office in 2012. He said his goal as a public servant was to leave things in better shape than when he arrived. At the age of 77, Earl passed away on December 23, 2019.
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) and the Riverview Woman’s Club (RWC) encourages seniors from each of the Riverview area high schools to apply for a higher education scholarship. For the second year in a row, the RWC Scholarship Committee’s goal, with the financial support of the Riverview community and GRCC investors, is to award five (5) $1,000 Scholarships.
The Dr. Earl Lennard Scholarship is not a needs-based scholarship and the student’s college or trade school of choice is not limited to Florida institutions. The Student must attend either Lennard High School (named after Dr. Lennard), East Bay High School (where Dr. Lennard worked), Riverview High School, Spoto High School, work for a GRCC investor or have a parent/guardian investor of GRCC.
RWC Scholarship Committee activities are underway and application materials are up on their website for those interested in applying. The application deadline is March 1st. Visit riverviewwomansclub.org/scholarships for more information.
